Conquering the Road of Bones: The "Dirtster" Harley and the Cover of American Iron

Long before the motorcycle industry started pumping out heavy-weight "Adventure Bikes," there were guys who simply built their own. And nobody does it quite like legendary round-the-world rider Doug Wothke (RTWDoug).

Doug doesn't just ride across states; he rides across continents on bikes that have absolutely no business being there. Enter the "Dirtster"—a heavily modified Harley-Davidson Sportster built for one specific, insane mission: crossing the infamous "Road of Bones" in Siberia.

The Road of Bones: 2,500 Miles of Hell

The Road of Bones isn't a scenic highway. It is a 2,500-mile stretch of unpaved, swamp-ridden, gravel-and-mud nightmare terrain leading to Magadan in the Russian Far East. It earned its grim name during the Stalin era, when the prisoners who died building it were simply buried in the roadbed.

Before Doug, no Harley-Davidson had ever attempted to cross it. It is a place where missing bridges, deep water crossings, and bone-rattling washboards destroy suspensions, frames, and riders.

Building the Ultimate Off-Road Seat

When you are taking a Sportster into the Siberian wilderness, the factory vinyl seat is the first thing to go. It offers zero shock absorption, and the second you drop the bike on sharp rocks, the cheap plastic rips.

Doug came to our Richmond, VA shop at BAD&G Customs for a solution. We needed to build a true dual-sport solo seat that could survive the absolute worst conditions on the planet.

  • Endurance Ergonomics: We hand-shaped high-density foam to absorb the brutal impacts of the trail and keep Doug locked in place when the terrain got unpredictable.
  • Armor-Plated Leather: We wrapped the seat in our thickest American Steerhide. This leather breathes, resists tearing when laid down, and molds to the rider's shape.
  • Weatherproof Toughness: Treated to withstand constant mud, freezing rain, and river crossings without falling apart.

Cover of American Iron Magazine

The Dirtster didn't just survive the Road of Bones; it became a legend in the custom motorcycle world. The build was so groundbreaking that it landed straight on the COVER of American Iron Magazine in the August 2011 issue. Seeing our custom leatherwork front-and-center on the biggest V-Twin magazine in the country was an incredible honor, but the real pride came from knowing the seat did its job in the middle of nowhere.
